Another winner for Ms. Novak! August 17, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Watch Me (Last Stand, Book 3)
Twelve years ago Sheridan Kohl and Jason Wyatt were shot while parked near Whiterock, Tennessee. Sheridon was injured, but Jason was killed. Sheridan has never been able to move beyond that tragic incident and has held herself partly responsible. Had she not wanted to make Jason's stepbrother, Cain, jealous, she and Jason would never have been together.
Now, possible new evidence has energed and Sheridan, needing closure, travels from Sacramento back to Whiterock. But someone doesn't want her there, doesn't want her discovering what has been covered up for twelve years.
Once again she is attacked, this time rescued by Cain Granger, the man she has never gotten over. Cain fears for here life and takes her back to his cabin to nurse her back to health.
Both Sheridan and Cain go out of their way to avoid confronting the past and their feelings. Sheridan won't let herself become emotionally involved because she knows Cain doesn't care about commitment, and Cain seems to care more for his dogs and his grandfather than anyone else.
A cast of family and other townspeople complete the list of possible suspects, and Ms. Novak's deft weaving of plot and subplots keeps the reader guessing right down to the final pages. Coupled with Cain's and Sheridan's struggle to find clues to the killer's identity is their growing desire for one another.
This third in the Last Stand series oozes sensuality and suspense, items Brenda Novak writes with consummate skill. Once begun, I could not put the book down until I finished the last page.
Bravo Ms. Novak.
Loved This Book Even More Than The First Two In The Last Stand Series August 14, 2008 And I loved the first two books, too. Complex layers of suspense build until the pulse pounding conclusion. Couldn't put it down and didn't want to. Brenda Novak gets better and better with each novel she writes. I recommend this read to anyone who enjoys suspense. The love story between Sheridan and Cain with all its twists and turns is a wonderful bonus - GREAT read.
Not the last in the "Last Stand" series August 13, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
When the gun that was used to injure Sheridan Kohl and kill her companion Jason twelve years earlier turns up, Sheridan travels back to the town she'd rather forget to try to solve the now cold case. The incident was a turning point in Sheridan's life, as she now runs a non-profit company dedicated to victims. But her appearance has the killer pretty upset - enough that he kidnaps and tries to kill her again, only to have town bad boy Cain Granger step in and rescue her. Sheridan has always carried a torch for Cain, in fact, she was with his stepbrother that night in an attempt to make Cain jealous. Guilt has plagued them both in their role in Jason's death, and it doesn't help that many think he was the gunman. The two share close quarters as they investigate the crime, but the killer is one step ahead and getting desperate enough to tie up loose ends.
Novak's latest installment in her "Last Stand" series is a riveting novel that easily stands on its own. Both Sheridan and Cain are pretty complex characters with so much emotional baggage, but Novak manages to keep them from becoming too stereotypical of your average romantic suspense. Cain is somewhat of a loner - on one hand gruff and unapproachable, relating more to his dogs. But when he interacts with his grandpa Marshall or is taking care of Sheridan, his true personality emerges. While the mystery aspect was not too much of a surprise, Novak's gift for dialogue and knack for crafting a story are ever prevalent. While this series was originally touted as a trilogy, there will soon be another "Last Stand" story on the horizon.
superb regional whodunit August 7, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
A dozen years ago in Whiterock, Tennessee teenagers Sheridan Kohl and Jason Wyatt were parked when someone shot both of them. She survived but he died while the culprit was not caught. Most townsfolk including Jason's dad believe the lad's stepbrother Cain Granger got away with murder. That tragedy shaped Sheridan's life as she became a dedicated caseworker for The Last Stand, a firm that helps crime victims.
When she learns that the rifle used to kill Jason has been found after twelve years, Sheridan reluctantly returns home as the cold case suddenly turns hot. However, her welcome home turns to be someone beats her severely enough that the predator left her for dead. Cain saves her life and helps her heal; taking leave from his job. Attracted to each other, Cain and Sheridan team up to try to uncover the real killer of Jason before the culprit kills Sheridan.
The third Last Stand thriller (see STOP ME and TRUST ME) is a superb regional whodunit starring a powerful cast especially the lead duet. The story line is fast-paced from the moment Sheridan decides to return to her Eastern Tennessee hometown in hopes of real closure by having the killer finally caught. Readers will appreciate Sheridan's Last Stand as she risks her life to be able to truly close that tragic chapter of her life and if she survives that need perhaps move on with her hero Cain.

Best one of the series August 7, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have read the first three books in the "Last Stand" series and have to say, I think this one might be the best yet. It was a great Romantic Suspense novel filled with just enough mystery to keep readers turning the pages until the very last page. The characters are well developed, and the author does a good job of keeping the story line moving at a rapid pace. There are enough suspects to keep the reader guessing whodunit and although some might figure it out sooner than the reveal, it is most definitely not a let down. This is coming from a reader who usually does not give 5 stars out unless the author stumps me, but I was so pulled into the story from the first few pages that I gave it a whole 5 stars for the sheer suspense that kept me riveted to the pages.
In case anyone is wondering if they need to read the other two books in the series, the answer is no. All the "Last Stand" novels are stand alone novels and can be read in any order. The first book does give more detail of the other women involved with the victim's rights organization, but it is not necessary to know those characters because they have very little parts in the books in which their character is not the focus of the story.
Sheridan Kohl was the victim of a fatal shooting 12 years earlier and although she survived, she still holds herself responsible for the death of Jason Wyatt. Now, after all these years later, Sheridan returns to her small hometown in Tennessee where no one has forgotten what happened, nor have they forgiven her. Soon after arriving to town, Sheridan awakes groggy and disoriented from a severe beating. She is in the woods and someone is digging her grave. The next thing she remembers, Cain Granger, the boy she gave her virginity to and the step-brother of Jason, is nursing her back to health. The only problem is that the entire town, including Cain's family believe he is the prime suspect in the murder of Jason and the attempted murders on Sheridan. Will her childish crush on this man keep her from seeing his guilt as everyone else does, or will she be his one ally in this deadly murder investigation?
Is it worth buying?
Absolutley. I loved it. Read it from beginning to end and loved the constant suspense and mystery angle. I am anxiously awaiting the next in the Last Stand series by this talented author, and only wish it was coming sooner than next year. Buy this book and any others in the series. Brenda Novak does an excellent job of combining both romance and suspense together.
