5 out of 5 stars Great Book   March 21, 2008
This is a pleasant, enjoyable read if your a fan of urban fantasy.

But what really sets it apart is the insight into Russia, given that the author is russian.

So its a fun read, but then it makes you wonder...

5 out of 5 stars 2nd in Series by THE man of Russian Sci-Fi   January 12, 2008
Forget about Harry (underage) Potter. This series by Sergei Lukyanenko brings magic into the realm of actual adults with all of our foibles and is set in real-time gritty, urban Russia. If you love the genre--as well as good writing--read this series...

5 out of 5 stars More addicting than energy drinks   January 12, 2008
So I finally, after pining forever, bought this book. It's told mainly from the perspective of the the Dark Others and it blew my mind.

1-the writing was amazing. The writing style didn't take anything away from the story and the plot was addicting, even more so then the first.
2-the humor was very good. Actually the humor issue was the only thing I was a bit disappointed about in the first one, where it was rather dry. In DAYWATCH it came out more naturally and was easy to pick up on.
3-Returning characters were wonderful. Usually when you have a dramatic focus shift between books, returning characters seem weaker or annoying, more fluff than anything else. I SAY NAY NAY! I actually appreciate Anton's character more than ever, even though he does seem a bit more Droopy when it comes to his love life.

I am now currently awaiting book 3 to arrive!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite of the three Night Watch novels   November 7, 2007
I felt Night Watch started strong, but the third story really dragged. The first story of Day Watch has an exciting, action-packed beginning, slows down in the middle, and then speeds up at the end - but that slow middle is pretty okay because the story is told from the perspective of Alisa, a Dark Other, so even when she's lounging around "on vacation," her internal monologue is a lot more interesting then, say, Anton's in the third story of Night Watch when everyone's just kind of chilling out at Tiger Cub's vacation home... The second and third stories of Day Watch are the best two stories of the entire series and even though I prefer this over Night Watch, you should still read Night Watch first, not just for background, but because there are things in Day Watch that will spoil some of the climaxes in Night Watch. You can only go blind into something once.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars...again!   September 23, 2007

I love all of Sergie's books in the Night Watch series. Since this book focuses more on the wizard and witches of Darkness, (basically the bad guys in book one) it gives you an interesting perspective to understand their side of the Treaty, and their powers. And for better or worse, the first-person narrative is not always Anton like Night Watch and Twilight Watch. You might miss him in the beginning, but you'll soon get over it. Also this book has absolutely nothing to do with the plot of the Day Watch movie.

Also I'm sure some other reviewer will make this same suggestion, but for those of you going through Harry Potter withdrawal, GET INTO the Night Watch books. They are a lot more adult and arguably way better. Start with Night Watch though, not Day Watch.
